A CAMPAIGN has begun to try to prevent a council-run nursery from closing.

Six are under threat including those at Field Lane, at Rastrick, New Road, in Sowerby Bridge, Siddal, Elland and Todmorden.

But parents at Wellholme Park Children’s Centre, in Brighouse, are the first to organise a petition and letters to Calderdale Council.

People passing the premises in Bradford Road showed their support by tying brightly coloured ribbons to the nursery fence this week.

A parent Helen Fulcher said: “Some parents are still unaware that if the funding is withdrawn it could result in the nursery closing.

“The staff are brilliant. It is critical that people get involved in the consultation because the nursery is at the heart of our community. Thousands of children have come through the doors of the nursery and we need to keep it in our community. Children are going to suffer.”

A council spokeswoman said resources had to be spent on those who are in most need and a formal 90-day consultation process is underway.

If it results in the subsidy being withdrawn, users will be given six months notice to allow them to plan and make arrangements.

Other options the council could take are to ask a private operator to take over the centre or leave it as it is.
