AS CALDERDALE Council announce plans to introduce parking charges at public parks we asked park users for their views.

As reported in Saturday’s Courier the Council may introduce the charges in the wake of cuts imposed by central government.

However, it is clear that people travel from across West Yorkshire to make use of Calderdale’s facilities such as Shibden Park and Ogden Water.

While some may be prepared to fork out for a day at the park –others were angry with the council’s plans.

Ndumiso Hlabangana, 30, from Denholme, said: “I think it’s fair to pay for parking. There has to be maintenance costs and in most places it’s about £4 to £6 to park for all day.

“About £2 to £3 would be reasonable for parking but no more.

“If they do start charging I hope they sort out some proper parking though.”

Alwyn and Catherine Thompson, are both 63, from Odsal, Bradford.

Alwyn said: “It wouldn’t put us off coming here and it must take a lot of keeping.

“Who pays for cutting down trees and picking up litter?”

Catherine said: “The money raised should definitely come back to Ogden and other parks rather than straight into council funds.”

Philip and Jackie Rhodes, both 49, were visiting Shibden from Horsforth, Leeds.

Philip said: “I wouldn’t mind paying. At Malham you pay about £3 to park and at Bolton Abbey it’s about £6. I think people would be happy to pay a couple of quid to park for the day.”

Jackie said: “Some people might even be put off coming if you didn’t have to pay because they’d ask if there’s actually anything to do at the parks.” Rachel Cordingley, 29, from Huddersfield, said: “I am angry. We come more or less every single week.

“Parks should be free. I do love Shibden and it’s always clean but we spend money in the cafe and on the boats anyway.”

Jamie Marsden, 34, from Huddersfield, said: “We come over a lot in the summer. Calderdale’s the best place for parks and better than anything in Huddersfield. All families are being squeezed financially so it’s great to have a free grade one facility for families on lower incomes who can’t afford to pay.”
