Parking in Calderdale - let's start again from scratch!
This story ran in the Courier recently. It would seem like a good idea to have a completely fresh look at parking in Halifax.
Getting into Halifax and finding a parking spot once there is one of the most-discussed subjects regarding the town centre.
You would think if it was given some thought we could come up with a solution which meant people could park up close to the town centre without needing to drive right through it and make it an unpleasant place to walk.
The new multi-storey at Broad Street will help - but this fresh look at the whole problem looks appealing. The Courier story:
A WHOLESALE review of parking throughout Calderdale is to be carried out.
Councillors want to study the effects of on-street charges, residential parking permits, the enforcement regime and the scope for creating more spaces.
"We need to go back to square one with this review, look at the problems and find ways of solving them," said Barry Collins, chairman of Calderdale Council regeneration and development scrutiny panel.
"There are parking problems in many areas and we need to have a clearer view of priorities before making any more changes," he said.
The move comes only weeks after Calderdale Council was forced into an embarrassing U-turn over plans to make hundreds of people pay for permits to park outside their homes.
Councillor Collins (Lab, Illingworth and Mixenden) said talks would be held with the Halifax bank about extending its multi-storey at Hunger Hill for public use.
"But that won't provide an instant solution and we need to come up with some imaginative ideas to maximise all the spaces which are already available," he said.
The panel expects to have an initial report from officers on parking problems in September.
Allen Clegg (Ind, Warley) said drastic action was needed especially in Halifax because if work begins later this year on a planned leisure and retail development at Broad Street, hundreds of parking spaces will be lost overnight.
He has urged councillors to make parking provision their top priority for the sake of shoppers, businesses and town centre workers.
