A NEW health centre opened today serving 8,000 patients.
The Boulevard Medical Practice, Savile Park Road, Halifax, is on the site of the former Holy Trinity Junior School.
A listed building, dating back to the 1760s has been refurbished during the construction.
The existing Heath House Surgery on Free School Lane has been relocated into the new centre after builders’ completed the finishing touches late last week.
Practice manager Bev Barr said: “We are thrilled by the new surgery development but it’s doubly brilliant that we have been able to save a beautiful old building.
“Although The Boulevard Medical Practice will have all the modern facilities of a doctor’s surgery we have been able to keep the old building’s unique features and we have integrated them into the design of the practice.”
The practice outgrew its former home which was in a conservation area and offered no opportunity for expansion.
“We had been trying to relocate for many years - because it was a conservation area we had to look for a new site,” she said.
“We ran out of space and had no room on the ground floor for medical rooms.”
Patients will now be cared for in a purpose-built premises offering more accommodation and the opportunity to provide extra services in the future.
The Boulevard Medical Practice has nine consultation rooms, three treatment rooms, one clean treatment room and a health education room offering greater space for patients and doctors.
A local pharmacy is also transferring to the site.
Five GPs and a registrar are supported by nursing and administrative staff.
All patients have been contacted and informed about the move and the practice telephone number stays the same - 01422 365533.
