A CHEQUE for more than £16,000 has been handed over after a mammoth cycle ride in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis society.

Elland Ladies Circle raised £16,500 for the MS society as well as £1,500 for other charities.

The team of 17 cyclists completed a coast-to-coast cycle ride last year from Whitehaven to Tynemouth - a whopping 155 miles.

They added another £700 thanks to their annual Cake break - also held for the charity.

They handed the money over to the charity at a committee meeting.

Former chairwoman Viv Weston said: “I chose the MS society as it is a disabling disease that can effect peoples lives in a big way.

“It is very common in young females and I have friends with the disease,” she said.

“I have seen first hand how it can have an impact on their lives, I hope the money we have raised can help local people and their families cope with the disease.”
