IT is the end of the line for another of Calderdale’s ancient hilltop hostelries.

The Travellers Rest, at Steep Lane, Sowerby, dates from 1623 and stands alongside an old packhorse route.

It was renowned for having to rely on spring water which sometimes dried up during hot spells.

In recent years it built an enviable reputation as a gastro pub but like so many others it was badly affected by the recession.

Peter Sawrij has now been given planning approval by Calderdale Council to turn the pub into two houses, to renovate an adjoining cottage and landscape the car park.
