A Calderdale man has received an honourary degree for his dedicated work to make towns across the world sustainable and vibrant.

Chris Sands received the degree from Staffordshire University in recognition of his creation - the Totally Locally Town Kit.

Totally Locally started in Calderdale more than five years ago, and since then Chris has spent thousands of hours transforming it into an online ‘self help kit’ for any town to use.

It has spread to Australia, France, New Zealand, USA, Italy and Canada, with all towns across the world helping each other.

Chris said “It was an experience of a lifetime, something I will never forget.

“It was a great honour to represent all the volunteers around the world that run Totally Locally, and of course Calderdale as a the stunning and innovative place it is.”

Jon Fairburn, professor of sustainable development at Staffordshire University, said: “This is such a deserved award for Chris and the phenomenal work he has put into the Totally Locally concept and toolkit.”
