Public to vote on jubilee parks plan

TWO Calderdale playing fields could be given special status to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Calder Holmes Park in Hebden Bridge has been shortlisted despite the town council saying it won’t spend a penny on jubilee events, as reported in yesterday’s Courier.

A campaign by “Fields in Trust” aims to protect 2,012 parks, gardens and play spaces throughout the country to also mark the London Olympics.

Calderdale Council has drawn up a list of 18 sites that local people might be able to vote for, if the cabinet gives the go-ahead.

Communities director Robin Tuddenham said: “The aim is to protect outdoor recreational space for generations to come, while also providing a focal point for celebrations in 2012.

“A public vote will encourage participation and community commitment to the successful site.”

Sport England and refuse contractor SITA have provided some sponsorship.
