A firefighter who tackled the Chernobyl disaster has been in Elland this week talking to school children about his experiences.

Alexander Zalevsky’s visit has formed part of the Chernobyl Awareness Week, which has also seen a group of young children from the area come over to stay with local families.

Mr Zalevsky talked at an assembly at Old Earth Primary School before meeting physics students at Brooksbank and Ryburn high schools later in the week.

Angela Bottomley, chair of the charity Halifax and Bradford Link, said: “It went brilliantly. The children at Old Earth really listened intently and asked some fabulous questions.

“They’re now hoping to get there school councillors together and see how they can help the charity, which is great.

“His talks are really informative and cover his role in tackling the disaster, the health problems he’s had since and the consequences of the disaster in the area.”

Meanwhile, tickets are still available for tonight’s concert at the Ukranian Club on Queens Road, which will feature performances by two Ukrainian dance groups.

Tickets cost £5. For more details, call 07825 643679.
