The owners of Clock Face Quarry at Barkisland have been given extra time to refill the site – three weeks after Calderdale Council planning committee rejected the proposal.

P Casey Enviro Ltd applied to the council to have the time they have to refill the site in Saddleworth Road extended to 2020.

This was rejected by thecommittee on February 1.

But investigation into the refusal revealed the councillors did not have the authority to reject the application due to legislation from the Minerals Planning Authority.

Casey’s have now agreed to reduce the restoration deadline to May 2015.

They will also discuss with residents the issue of mud spilling on to the busy Saddleworth Road.

Resident Ian Birch slammed council officers, who suggested that the amount of mud on the road did not render it unsafe.

“The council describing the problem as staining was truly absurd and insulting to residents,” he said.

“Neither of the wheel washers at the quarry are remotely effective and the road sweeper makes little difference.

“Somehow reports made by residents don’t seem to reach the planning officers as they were in denial at the meeting,” he said.
