HUNDREDS turned out despite sleet and rain to mark one of the most important dates in the muslim calendar.

The birthday of Mohammed, the last prophet, was celebrated with a procession from the Al-Jamia Al-Zahra Mosque, Francis Street, Halifax.

The route was lit up with fireworks throughout and finished at Parkinson Lane Primary School.

Professor Syed Ahmad Hussain led the procession.

A spokesperson from the mosque said: “This is a great day celebrating the birth of the blessed prophet Mohammed.

“Tomorrow we will have a meeting of scholars from across England and Pakistan in honour of this special day.”
