SUPPORT has been overwhelming for a Halifax charity ball in aid of Help for Heroes.

All tickets have been sold for the bash at the Shay Bankqueting Suite on July 28.

Organisers Dave Molloy and Richard Mellor have been staggered by the response and hope a final push for donations, raffle and auction prizes will help raise £15,000.

Mr Molloy, a printing company sales director, was in a London hotel room in March when he heard the news that six soldiers, including five from the 3rd Yorks (Duke of Wellington’s Regiment) had been killed in Afghanistan.

“It affected me and I knew how much it must have affected Rick - a former soldier - and I texted him to see if he was interested in helping fundraise for Help for Heroes,” said Mr Molloy.

Mr Mellor, of Illingworth, Halifax, jumped at the chance and the support snowballed.

He served with the Dukes from 1999 to 2007 which included two tours of Kosovo.

The 3 Yorks recruiting heartland is Halifax and the regimental museum is at Bankfield, Boothtown, so the men booked the biggest venue in town for the ball.

“I have a lot of friends out in Afghanistan and we are in touch most days,” said Mr Mellor, an NVQ assessor.

“We have had so much support, it has been unbelievable and sold tickets on a first-come first-served basis.”

Mr Molloy said the 250 tickets were soon snapped up and there would be entertainment from the International Party Doctors and the compete is Pete Emmett.

Also addressing the audience will be Corporal Simon Brown who was shot in the face while saving six comrades in Iraq in 2006.

Barclays Bank is the main sponsor of the event and is matching funds raised up to £7,500.

Mr Molloy, formerly of Bradshaw, called into the Commercial Street branch in Halifax to open an account for the ball and said staff wanted to get involved.

“It has all been phenomenal,” he said.

Stars from Chelsea FC have given a signed football and the auction and raffle also includes spa treatments and a helicopter ride.
