A HEAD TEACHER has hit out after a road closure delayed an ambulance reaching the school.

Janet Hutton, head at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Portland Road, is frustrated that the lower end of Prospect Street has been closed for the second time in a year.

She said: “It is causing huge problems and major disruption.

“We called the emergency services for an ambulance and it took longer to get here because the road closure didn’t show up on the satnav.

“The school is now inaccessible from the A58 and people are having to use the back way through Range Lane, which is full of twists and turns.

“If there was frost or snow we would not be able to get to school.

“We just don’t know what is going on and I can’t see anything happening to it very quickly.

“We want it sorted as soon as possible.”

The road was closed between April and September last year when the adjacent hillside became unstable.

It was re-opened after the owners, Blackshaw Holdings, undertook extensive work.

But it was closed again in mid- Janary by Calderdale Council due to concerns over further slippage.

Acting head of highways and engineering Dave Tee said: “Public safety always comes first, so we have decided to close a short stretch until the land is stabilised.

“We will work with the owners again to try to resolve the problem.”
