Rowing - Making a splash - indoors

Pupils at landlocked Rishworth School are making a splash in the competitive world of indoor rowing.

Year 9 student Liz Moore has introduced the sport to the school and already two teams, one boys and one girls, have made something of an impression in recent events.

Moore, who rows for Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club and competed in the National Championships in Birmingham, entered the teams for the Schools Indoor Rowing League.

The first round of the competition saw the girls' team achieve 16th place out of 50 while the boys' team were 30th out of 35.

Rishworth showed a fine improvement in the second round where the girls were 10th and the boys 16th out of 60 schools at this point. After the third round the girls were 10th and boys 11th.

The teams train and participate using the rowing machines in the school's fitness suite, housed in the Sports Hall. They race once a month and train at least three times a month

Bob Moore, a parent and the team coach said: "Given that the school is competing against some teams made up of specialist rowers this is an outstanding achievement from what is a very mixed group of enthusiastic students."

The Rishworth squads are: Girls: Katie Shannon, Nancy Moore, Kasia Faulkner, Joelle O'Neill, Anna Sutcliffe, Gabby Roberts, Harriet Horsfall, Liz Moore, Lauren Douglas and Sohie Marshall

Boys: Joe Thompson, Matthew Tyson, Matthew Siggins, Robert Green, Danny Hirst, Toby Kane and Ben Anderson.
