Rugby League: It's a first as locals meet in League clash

THERE were a number of firsts when the Phoenix Centre Pupil Referral Unit, based in Halifax, took on William Henry Smith Residential School from Brighouse in a Year 10 rugby league clash.

It was the first time the two sides had met in any sport and was the first time the Phoenix PRU had played a rugby league game.

The occasion also marked William Henry's first game in a number of years so it was always going to be a keen and closely-fought encounter.

This proved to be the case as Phoenix narrowly claimed the honours with a 40-34 success.

The opening encounters were very physical as both teams went looking to make their mark in defence - William

Henry's Tom Varley and Dominic Hunter trading big shots with Zac Taylor and Dominic Priestley.

The PRU drew first blood with Zac Bazunu, who proved to be a handful all afternoon, scoring the first of his four tries from long range.

William Henry soon replied with a long range try from powerhouse Elliot Clayton who was also outstanding and the teams continued to trade scores until two tries from the outstanding Frank Dunn and an intelligent intercept from Aiden Kershaw, who also kicked six from seven goals stretched the PRU's lead.

William Henry hit back through good work from the strong running Liam Fell and credit to William Henry for making the game go right up until the last play of the game.

A return match is already pencilled in for later in the year.

KING Cross Park Emerging Eights were away to Meltham who ran out 36-16 winners.

Meltham raced into a 16-0 lead after five minutes before Park hauled themselves back with Lewis Scott and Luke Latham making good yards which enabled Emerson Bradwell to race over.

Park started to play some good rugby with Aaron Brook and Ben Hellowell directing play and Finn Ferguson and Alex Dowling making good ground.

Edward Chippendale and Niall Green put in fine defensive stints but they were unable to prevent Meltham adding another try before half time for a 20-4 lead.

Park began the second half well and were rewarded with another Bradwell try after good work from newcomer Lewis Loughrey and Conall Ferguson.

Luke Latham was next on the scoresheet shortly after Meltham had scored another try. Again Meltham hit back with another try but Park scored again through Lennon Partington's strong run for Ben Hellowell to dive over on the last tackle from short range.

However, meltham finished with a flourish and secured the win with a further two tries.

KING Cross Park under eights were also away to Meltham and were forced to work hard for their 20-16 success.

Park were rocked after conceding an early try against the run of play. That kick-started them into action with strong running form Liam Midgley and Bailey Durkin laying the platform for Rourke Woolley to dance over.

Meltham restored their lead with a further two tries despite some strong tackling from Cameron and Tyler Brook. Woolley then claimed his second try just before half time after strong runs from James Crook and Harrison Barker.

Park drew level immediately after the restart with Joe Stott producing a brilliant try after good work from Aaron Brook and Ben Hellowell and strong running down the slope from the reliable Liam Midgley and Ben Durkin.

Meltham hit back yet again and after Woolley was held up over the line, Park threw everything they had at the Meltham defence and it finally broke when Joe Stott dived over in the corner to level the scores after Tyler Brook had previously been denied by good Meltham defence.

Park stepped up another gear and after great cover tackling from Aaron Brook, Luke Latham and Emerson Bradwell, Harrison Barker managed to break through from halfway point to sprint over for the final try.
