Rugby League: Siddal hit back in fine style
SIDDAL under 12s bounced back from their defeat the previous week to beat Wyke 66-0.
Lewis Hosty's kicking game was accurate and caused Wyke no end of problems. Josh Making scored in the first few minutes, proving too strong for the defence.
The ball was then spun out to the wing and Freddy Kenyon scored.
Forwards Harris Abbott, Josh Making and Nathan Bell had a major impact on the game, and next on the scoreboard was Bell who received a short ball from Edward Ainley to score.
Wyke were unable to get to the halfway line, Siddal capitalised with three more tries from Kenyon, Harris Abbott and Bell.
In the second half, Siddal started strongly, Josh Rickett scoring. Making then scored his second try before Bell completed his hat trick.
Wyke had no answers to the Siddal pack and with 10 minutes remaining three more tries were added from Rickett, Bell and Making.
KING Cross Park under 16s maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a gritty 22-20 victory over Whinmoor Warriors.
Cross did things the hard way, with three of the visitors' tries coming from handling errors and only managing to convert one of their own five touchdowns.
With a deluge of penalties against them, they played most of the second period without the ball and had to give everything in a backs to the wall defensive performance.
The first try came from a brilliant handling move, Callum Dunne sliding over to score.
The back three of Emmerson Whittle, Alex Mellor and Will Milner grafted away, with Zak Dewhurst always looking a handful with the ball.
On 20 minutes one of the visiting centres needlessly got involved in something and got dispatched to the sin bin and Adam Brook made a smart break before handing on to Dewhurst who went on an a diagonal run to score wide out on the right. The teams went into the half time break with Park leading 8-0.
The second half was only two minutes old when Whinmoor scored their first try which was converted, but Park immediately hit back when Dunne scored his second try of the game wide on the left.
Adam Brook was next to score when he shaped to pass before ducking under the only serious challenge for a brilliant try.
Things got a little tense when Whinmoor scored two quick fire tries, neither of which were converted, but the lead was now just 16-14 and, with 10 minutes left, it was game on.
Park responded superbly, Josh Hunt went over for a brilliant try from 40 metres with some fantastic footwork and crucially went under the posts for Milner to calmly slot over the extras.
The game wasn't over yet though, and Whinmoor scored with the final play of the game when their second rower followed up his speculative kick and came up with a try. The conversion was added but the final whistle went to end an enthralling match.
GREETLAND Rangers under 15s played their best rugby of the season to overcome local rivals Elland 12-10.
A superbly timed short pass from George Hulme allowed James Turner to burst free and score under the posts, Connor Farnell adding the extras.
Elland responded well and had a sustained period camped on Greetland's line. Great defence from the likes of Joe Parker and Harry Latham held them out, but eventually the home team got themselves on the scoreboard with an unconverted try from Gary Greenwood.
The points were no more than Elland deserved, but the try seemed to inspire Rangers to up their game once again, a scrum deep in Elland territory giving man of the match Jozef Bird the chance to shrug off several tacklers for a super try, converted once again by Farnell.
As the half drew to a close Elland pressed once again and some superb handling created enough space for Dom Patrice to score, Jamie Holroyd converting and the half ending 12-10 in the visitors' favour.
The second half was a tense affair, with the defences of both teams dominating and the full time whistle went without any further points being scored. The conversion was added but the final whistle went to end an enthralling match.
