Rugby Union: Halifax ready for last hurrah

HALIFAX RUFC coach Dave Harrison is confident he will put out a team for his side's final National Three (North) clash of the season at home to Harrogate tonight, (7.30).

The club's chronic shortage of players finally hit home last week when they were forced to forfeit Saturday's game at Loughborough Students.

However, with a number of the players expecting to turn out in Halifax colours for the last time, Harrison said there had been a desire among his battle-worn troops to see the campaign through to a conclusion.

"The players have stated a real desire to play in this final game," said Harrison.

"Obviously it will be the last time at Halifax for some of them and they feel they want to try and restore a little bit of pride and bring some closure if you like.

"It will mean some turning out with injuries that would normally keep them out but we are looking to end with a bang."

Among the players expected to show up are centre Tim Mennell, who was initially ruled out for the remainder of the season after taking a painful knee to the kidneys at Leicester Lions last month.

Long-term absentee Dom Castle is expected to return at scrum half alongside stand off Craig Barker, who is still suffering from a damaged hand sustained in the defeat at Caldy.

As well as his walking wounded, Harrison is also expected to start with James Cowling on one wing for his first appearance since coming on as a substitute against Harrogate at Claro Road two seasons ago.

Richard Brown is definitely unavailable so Dominic Moon will slot in at No 8 flanked by Fraser Hall and Tom Whitehead.

Tom Gilchrist, Andrew Goodwin and Toby Turner are expected to make up the bench.

Harrison is hoping that the desire to produce a performance mixed with the fixture being brought forward from this Saturday will work in Halifax's favour.

"It could be that Harrogate are just looking to finish a long season and may not particularly relish a midweek trip to Halifax," added Harrison.

"With our players looking to finish on a high we might just be able to sneak something and at least finish with a smile on our faces.

"There will be nothing left for me to do except rev the lads up and let them get stuck into them."
