A scientist who has received international recognition for his work studying space rock is to become an Honorary Citizen of Todmorden.

Professor Grenville Turner, an isotope geophysicist who was born and raised in Todmorden, is a consultant for NASA and a Fellow for the Royal Society.

His work studying space rock led to a clearer understanding of the development of the solar system.

Todmorden town councillor Richard White, who nominated Professor Turner for the Honorary Citizen Award, said: “His work has been ground-breaking.”

Coun David O’Neill, who chairs the town council’s citizenship awards sub-committee, said: “He is an ex-pupil of Shade School who has gone on to do wonderful things.”

Mayor of Todmorden Coun Abid Hussain will present the award to Professor Turner at the annual Mayor’s Day next month.
