A rugby club’s fundraising efforts for a toddlers park has had a fantastic start raising £9,500 from two events.

A recent Sid-Fit day brought in £6,500 and that followed £2,500 from a race day.

Siddal RLFC have set a target of raising £30,000 in memory of two former players Mick Shaw and Matthew Smith.

The club runs teams at all age levels but lacks facilities for toddlers who often attend the club with their dads.

Johnny Lawless, who is on the fundraising committee, said there had been a fantastic response to the project.

“We are almost one-third of the way there so it’s been a great start,” he said.

Sid-Fit comprised several events which included a sponsored walk, fun run, 10k run and 60 mile bike ride.

There was also a rugby match between Siddal All Stars against an invited All Stars team including several former top professionals.

Those attending lingered in warm weather and enjoyed a barbecue and live music also.

Fundraising dinners will be organised at a later date.
