“My sister mentioned that she’d seen The Gala was looking for a Queen for this year’s event and suggested that I should apply,” said the 17-year-old student.

“I was a bit nervous, but I called anyway, and then went along for the interview.”

Steph has attended Halifax Charity Gala almost every year.

The entertainment in previous years has inspired her Animal Care studies at Calderdale College.

She added: “I loved The Gala, especially the displays at Manor Heath. The falconry was the best part for me.”

Steph is interested in charity work and hopes to go to Africa to work with endangered safari animals.

Steph’s attendant will be Olivia Robinson, 17, from Halifax, who also studies at Calderdale College.

“I’ve known Steph since August, and she’s always so happy,” said Olivia.

“I’m thrilledto be in the procession alongside her.”

Elaine Bowers, of Halifax Calder Rotary Club, added: “We’re thrilled to have two smiling young ladies to be the ambassadors for Halifax overthe coming 12 months.

“Their kindness and warmth is exactly what’s required of a representative.

“I’m looking forward to supporting them as they enjoy their day on June 11,” she said.
