COUNCILLORS have been urged to issue bin collectors with snow shoes to try to keep the service operating safely during severe winter weather.
Councillor Roger Taylor said workers might also try dragging containers along the street to wagons parked on clear roads when minor roads are impassible.
"The commercial sector seems to manage so why is it SITA and Calderdale Council can't – are they hiding behind the health and safety banner?" he asked the cabinet.
Councillor Taylor (Con, Northowram and Shelf) was commenting after the latest cold snap when bins and recycling boxes in some areas were not collected for up to a month.
Economy and environment spokesman Barry Collins (Lab, Illingworth and Mixenden) said he would be meeting Sita to see what more could be done.
