She has been a hairdresser for less than two years but stylist Sophie Rane is already an award-winner.
The 17-year-old from Greetland has just scooped first prize in the Junior Up Trends section of the Blackpool Hairdressing Championships.
She also took second and third place in several other categories.
“It felt amazing to win,” said Sophie.
“It was such a surprise. When they didn’t read my name for second or third place, I thought I must have done really badly.”
Sophie is a stylist at Michelle Collins Hairdressers, on Church Street in Elland.
She started as a Saturday girl at the salon when she was 16 and graduated to becoming a stylist.
“Hairdressing is something I’ve always wanted to do, ever since I can remember,” she said.
“As I got older, I got more interested in the fashion side and experimenting.”
Sophie has just finished her second year of studying for a hairdressing apprenticeship at Taylor’s Training in Brighouse
She started entering competitions in 2011.
Her first was at Chicagos nightclub in Halifax.
Althought she did not gain a place in the top four at that contest, she was undeterred and entered another competition held in Preston where she came third.
Since then, she has competed in four or five contests, with the Blackpool Hairdressing Chapionships - a two-day event which is one of the biggest hairdressing competitions in the country - the most recent.
Sophie hopes to eventually move to London and become a celebrity and catwalk hair styist.
Her dream, she says, would be to style the hair for a catwalk by fashion designer Alexander McQueen
She urged any other budding hair stylists to pursue their ambitions.
“I’d say just go for it,” she said.”
Taylor’s Training, on Bradford Road in Brighouse, says it aims to inspire its apprentices, aged between 16 and 18, with a passion for hairdressing.
