Teens play sports to prevent yob behaviour

Teenagers are being urged to spend their summer holidays getting sporty.

The Lower Valley neighbourhood policing team, Calderdale Council and the Lower Valley Youth Service are running sessions of football, cricket, rugby, rounders and basketball at James Street play area in Elland for 13 to 16-year-olds from Elland and West Vale.

The project is aimed at preventing yob behaviour by giving youngsters other activities to get involved in.

Sergeant Warren Pitman said: “Diverting young people away from anti-social behaviour is what we as a group of partners are striving to achieve.

“At our first session we had over 40 young people and parents present, that’s over 40 young people who were not hanging around on streets or engaging in anti-social behaviour.”

The sessions take place tomorrow and on August, 17, 24 and 31 from noon until 2pm.
