A MIDWIFE from Halifax was presented with a top award as part of International Day of the Midwife and Nurses’ Day.

Debbie Coward took the Inspirational Midwife award, voted for by patients.

Debbie, from Hebden Bridge, is the Calder team leader. She said: “It’s nice to think you inspire people and that they voted for you.” Nurses Day was on May 12, the birth date of Florence Nightingale, recognised by many as a founder of modern nursing.

International Day of Midwives was launched in 1992, with the aim of celebrating midwifery and to raising awareness of their important work.

A nurse from Huddersfield, Jaswinder Takhar, 23 – who works at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary – was given the Nurse Hero award.

Helen Thomson, director of nursing at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This has been a really good week, celebrating the best of nursing and midwifery.”
