IT’S a boom time for stripping off at Ashdene Naturist Club.

It has just celebrated 25 years at Elland Road, Elland.

Already this year 26 new members have joined and the club has nearly 200 members.

Unlike many naturist clubs Ashdene is open all year round.

An undercover swimming pool opened three years ago has helped attract members and visitors to the club, which is set in spacious grounds around which are scattered with visiting caravans and mobile homes. There is also a bar.

Founder member Alan Wallace, 67, of Greetland, attends the club weekly and said it was a friendly evironment where people left their troubles outside.

“It gives us peace and quiet and we are one of a few clubs open 24/7,” he said.

During the winter members had to dig a path into the club so they could enjoy a Christmas dinner and Mr Wallace, a former bank manager, said naturists weren’t daft and kept covered up during cold weather.

“We have people from all over the north of England. They bring caravans, mobile homes and a few hardy souls bring tents,” said Mr Wallace.

A 25th anniversary dinner was recently held and attended by the Mayor of Calderdale, Keith Watson.

He said he enjoyed a nice evening which was attended by around 90 people.

“But, it’s highly unlikely I will be joining – not with my body!” he joked.
