Firefighters saved three cats from a fire in Shelf earlier today.

The blaze in the kitchen of a farm house at Pepper Hill was reported at 1.15pm.

Two crews from Odsal put out the flames and got three cats out. No one else was inside.

The fire caused extensive damage to the kitchen and there was smoke damage to the rest of the building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but is expected to have been lit material moving from the open range onto a chair.

Watch Commander Andy Mason urged people with open fires to always have guards in place and for everyone to have smoke detectors fitted.
