Five Hipperholme Grammar School pupils have been crowned national cheerleading champions.

Becky Cannon, Ronni Farr, Neala Farr, Olivia Speechley and Ella-Mia Hendry continued the school’s proud tradition in the sport by winning the Winter Open National Cheerleading Championships in Liverpool.

The Hipperholme girls, dancing as Dia-Namics and representing the Diamonds Gymnastics Club of Halifax, competed in the Under 12s ‘Street Cheer’ and the Under 12s ‘Pom Dance’.

The team’s tight, upbeat and well synchronised routine was outstanding in the ‘Pom Dance’ and was picked as the winning routine.

The ‘Street Dance’ routine was just as slick and in a close competition the girls achieved a creditable second.

The Dia-Namics’ squad is coached by Hipperholme Grammar School Cheer Coach, Dawn Murray, who was voted Coach of the year for 2011 by the UK Cheer Association.

Sue Oliver, admistrations and marketing officer at the school, said: “Dawn’s quality, as well as that of the young team, certainly shone through on the day.”
