A pensioner has thanked the heavenly firefighters who came to his aid after a nasty fall in Illingworth.

Geoffrey Whiteley, 86, was on his way to see his sister when he collapsed in the middle of Keighley Road due to exhaustion.

Firefighters arrived moments later and, having seen Mr Whiteley in the middle of the road and a stationary car next to him, initially thought that he had been knocked over.

However, the crew from Illingworth, soon found that the female driver had seen Mr Whiteley fall and had stopped to help him.

Firefighters helped Mr Whiteley to the pavement and gave him some oxygen, reassured him and kept him warm until an ambulance arrived to take him to hospital for a precautionary check-up.

Mr Whiteley, a retired mechanic, said: “It felt like they came to me before I hit the floor! I was relieved - they were a gift from heaven!

“I just wanted to come down and express how thankful I was for their help in my moment of need.”

The incident happened at 5.30pm on Sunday, March 8.
