TODMORDEN’s Christmas lights switch-on took an ironic twist when the ceremony was halted by a power cut.
A circuit in the town hall tripped out as organisers prepared for the countdown earlier in the day.
The town’s Mayor, Richard White said: “All the lights went out and they managed to get them back on but not in the part of the building the Christmas lights were switched on by.
“The Christmas tree lights were switched on by using an extension lead, but they went on and off again fairly rapidly because the extension lead had to go out of the door.”
The hiccup also plunged the town’s Polish Day celebrations into darkness.
Mayor of Calderdale Nader Fekri said: “We were just enjoying the Masurian folk dancing and in the middle of it the lights went out. Everyone carried on anyway.”
Coun Fekri said: “It was a bit of a disappointment but I know they will get it sorted out ASAP.”
