A CALDERDALE woman has become a Member of the European Parliament.

Rebecca Taylor, who was born in Todmorden, replaces Diana Wallis, the Hull-based Lib-Dem MEP who is standing down.

Rebecca is the daughter of former Mayor of Calderdale Michael Taylor and ex-county councillor Elisabeth Wilson. She studied at universities in Sheffield and Leeds and is a specialist in EU health and food policy. She said she would be “honoured” to take on the new role.

The Yorkshire and Humber regional seat in the European Parliament was expected to be handed over to Diana Wallis’s husband, Stewart Arnold, who was second on the party’s list of candidates but he has bowed to pressure and decided not to take over.

Ms Wallis recently failed in a bid to become President of the EU Parliament and is half way through her third five-year term as an MEP.

Rebecca Taylor will face another Euro election in 2014.
