University of Huddersfield lecturer Phillip McCann, one of the world’s most celebrated brass musicians, has achieved a unique double with his latest award.

The cornet soloist and conductor received the 2013 John Henry Iles medal in memory of the former Master of the Worshipful Company of Musicians.

It is awarded annually for services to the brass band movement and the company’s other brass-related award is the Harry Mortimer medal given to Mr McCann in 2003 and he is the only person to have been awarded both.

“It’s a great honour,” said Mr McCann, who was born in Scotland and a former principal cornet with Black Dyke Band, of Queensbury.
