ART and design students have brought the history of Sowerby Bridge to life with their brushstrokes.

Adam Ludlam and Ste Bartle, from Calderdale College, painted a mural depicting a timeline of the town in Pennine Housing’s Pollitfield estate.

Their course leader Robin Smith said: “It goes back to where the name Sowerby comes from, through to the Industrial Revolution and up to the present.

“I think the students are very proud of it. The reaction was very positive when it went up.”

Spencer Lister, estate co-ordinator at Penning Housing, said the idea had come from residents at their monthly meetings and they were pleased with the results.

“They were really made up to see it. They thought it was fantastic,” he said.

“We have quite a big elderly age group in that area and they really appreciated the timeline and history side of it, and the younger residents really like the graffiti style of it.

“It’s bringing the two age groups together and it has been really successful.”
