M62 closed to high-sided vehicles

The M62 has been closed to high-sided vehicles between J22 and J24 due to the strong winds.

Two lanes are also closed to all vehicles on the westbound carriageway between the junctions due to an accident.

Delays are currently around 15 minutes and the Highways Agency hopes to have it re-opened (except to high-sided vehicles) soon.

Meanwhile the strong winds continue to batter the area with the Met Office issuing an amber warning for our area.

BBC Look North weathermen has warned of gusts of 70mph reported at Emley Moor.

While the Met Office chief forecaster said: “The worst of the winds associated with the active frontal system will clear the far southeast of England soon after 1600 hours today. However, the main swathe of very strong winds on the southern side of the deep depression now across Wales will move northeastwards across northern England, Northern Ireland and into the far southwest of Scotland this evening, before easing from the south overnight.”

They are warning of potential for traffic disruption and damage to buildings and power lines.

On the western side of the Pennines a red warning has been issued meaning winds could reach 100mph.
