Tributes have poured in for a well known Highroad Well shop owner, whose “heart was always her shop”.

Joan Maude died at the age of 90 from pneumonia at the Stafford Manor Care Home.

Mrs Maude was a well known person in the community, as she had ran the Highroad Well grocery shop called S & J Maude in the 50s before changing to A & J Maude, where she worked with her son Anthony. Joan was there when it became The Spar shop and it had the post office inside, as it has today.

Joan and Selwyn Maude were married on February 18, 1946, and had three children - Vivienne, who has one child Victoria, Anthony, who has one child Clare, and Nigel, who passed away in 2003, who had two children Simon and Sarah. She had three great grandchildren Amelia, Holly and Rocco.

Vivienne remembers her mother in the shop. “She used to work in a shop on Gibbet Street with her dad before she bought the shop in Highroad Well. Everyone in the community knew her.

“My mother used to say behind the tills were her stage and that the shop was our bread and butter, so always have a smile on your face and give good customer service as they will call again.

“She made the best roast ham and people used to travel far to buy it,” Vivienne said.

Joan’s funeral will take place on July 17, at 12.45pm, at the Park Wood Crematorium and will be followed by refreshments at the Brown Cow to “raise a glass to a fine lady.”

In lieu of flowers, the family ask for donations to Grace Baptist Church or Stafford Manor Care Home.
