FUND-RAISERS have at last seen their work come to fruition as their £130,000 community rooms open.

All Saints Church, Elland, began raising money to refurbish the rooms at the back of the church in 2003 but the the transformation was put on hold after problems with the church roof.

“We’ve been raising funds for years,” said warden David Weston.

“The centre is a massive development for us and key to our future.”

The work attracted £36,000 in grants but the remaining £94,000 came from fund-raising events and parishioners’ donations. Among the money-spinners was the annual art exhibition, which raises thousands.

Architect George Pickles drew up the plans in 2002. It has been named after Canon Winter, a rector in 1903.

The official opening will be on October 13, but from 7pm tonight the doors will be open for people to look round.

“It’s a way of saying thank you and giving them some idea of the facilities,” said Mr Weston.

They include a kitchen and full audio-visual and IT facilities.
