Halifax Ukrainians and friends of the community celebrated the Ukrainian New Year.

More than 160 people attended the traditional New Year’s Dance in the newly refurbished hall.

Entertainment was provided by the Black Sea Cossacks and Orylk Ukrainian Dancers, the premier dance troupe in England. This year’s honoured guests were the Lady Mayor of Calderdale coun Pat Allen and her consort Robert Weeks.

Revellers and guests were treated to a buffet of Ukrainian and multi-national foods and this was followed by a raffle. The party went on til after midnight.

Tony Cooper, committee member thanked everyone for coming and for their support.

Mr Bohdan Kurylak, acting chair of the Committee, said: “We are mostly of Ukrainian descent and like to share our culture with friends of the wider community.

“The New Year’s Dance is now well established. Events in Ukraine have cast a dark shadow in the past year but the committee decided to go ahead to show solidarity with Ukraine.

“What better way to celebrate the Ukrainian character and resilience than with the Orylk Dancers who epitomise the Ukrainian Kozak spirit and always make the party special.”

Roman Suchyj from the Ukranian Community, said: “This was the first of our events in our newly refurbished hall.

“Everyone enjoyed the event and the new surroundings.

“We wish everyone a peaceful and happy New Ukrainian Year.

Ukranian New Year was celebrated by the Ukranian community on January 24.
