Unbelievable - Boss Aspin astonished by call off
BOSS Neil Aspin was astounded that Town's Unibond One North clash with Clitheroe was postponed on Saturday an hour before kick off.
The referee pulled the plug on the game after an hour of inspecting with groundstaff furiously spreading sand on the Shay pitch.
But Aspin felt the game should have gone ahead and, as if to prove a point, the Shaymen held an impromptu training session on the pitch up to and beyond the game's scheduled start time.
"Even though I know they always err on the side of caution, I thought the game would go ahead," said Aspin.
"It got to three o'clock and I could not see why it was called off.
"I appreciate the referee's got a difficult decision to make but I just think it is the way society's gone with the risk culture and everything.
"I don't think it is good for society that we have to wrap people in cotton wool all the time.
"Not everything is risk free and in a game of football there can be an injury at any time.
"As long as it is not a dangerous pitch I think the game should go ahead.
"Their manager wanted the game on and said it was perfectly all right to play. Both sets of players and both managers want to play, but it was called off."
Town now have two games to re-arrange - Saturday's and the home game with Colwyn Bay - and just two free dates.
They have no game on Tuesday, April 20 - the final midweek date of the season - or Saturday, March 13, which is the date set aside for the League Cup semi-finals
"I didn't anticipate this week not having a game on the Saturday," said Aspin.
"I never gave it a thought on Saturday morning.
"I realised there was a frost but didn't think we would be off.
"It adds to the fixture congestion and off the back of two good performances we wanted to get a home game on.
"It also takes up the spare slots."
Town were handed a boost after the final whistle in the games that escaped the freeze with leaders Lancaster City crashing 4-1 at Woodley Sports.
The Shaymen remained eight points behind City but have two games in hand and the teams meet at the Shay on April 10.
