A community has joined forces in its to fight against potential parking charges.

The car park in Wakefield Road, Hipperholme, is one of four earmarked for charges by the Lab/Lib-Dem coalition.

The others include Mill Lane, Bank Street and Church Lane all in Brighouse.

Two of the ward councillors, David Kirton and Graham Hall, have now set up a petition and have been from door to door collecting signatures and in the car park itself. More than 200 signatures were added to the list in two hours.

Charles Brickdale, chair of the Calderdale Valley Conservative Association, said: “We had a really good response. People were taking the pens out of our hands to sign the petition. Vitrually everyone was against the idea of imposing charges and were very concerned about the impact it would have on commercial activity and the general economic health of Hipperholme.

“There is a great deal of concern and anxiety that once they have been imposed they were been seen as an easy option for increase in the future.

“People don’t feel the council has looked in great detail into how savings can be made in the budget and they are picking on the parking charges as a safe option.”
