Vote change on agenda

PUBLIC debates on the Alternative Vote referendum next month will take place in Hipperholme and Halifax.

Churches Together in Hipperholme and District has organised a meeting and speakers include Calder Valley Tory MP Craig Whittaker and Calderdale Council Lib-Dem Coun Nader Fekri.

Mr Whittaker will urge people to vote “no” in the referendum on changing Britain’s voting system from “First Past the Post” while Coun Fekri will support calls for a “yes” vote.

Representing the all-party campaigns will be Alex Story for “No to AV” and James Baker for “Yes to Fairer Votes.”

The main part of the debate will be taken up with questions and comments from the audience.

Churches Together secretary Charles Brickdale said: “There are few issues more important than how we vote.

“This debate will be an opportunity for voters to hear the case for each side in the referendum and to ask questions.”

The debate will take place at Christ Church, Hipperholme, on Friday April, 15, 8 pm. Admission is free.

The King’s Centre, Park Road, Halifax, will stage its debate on Wednesday, April 13, from 7.30 pm.

Guests include The Rt Rev Colin Buchanan, former Bishop of Woolwich; Rev Canon Dr Jonathan Draper, Canon Theologian of York Minster; Halifax MP Linda Riordan; Craig Whittaker MP and representatives of both the yes and no campaigns.

The chairman will be Christian Pastor Dave Gilpin. To register for a free wine reception go to http://ddnorth.eventbrite.com
