Wakefield 1 FC Halifax Town 1: Boss happy with efforts

TOWN were unable to hold on for victory at College Grove as Wakefield became the second side in five days to peg back the Shaymen with a late goal.

But boss Neil Aspin was full of praise for his players who took the lead and hit the woodwork three times in addition to creating numerous other chances only to surrender two points to an 87th-minute leveller.

James Dean put the Shaymen in front after 63 minutes with Wes Milnes heading Wakefield's late equaliser

"It is frustrating and I feel for the players because they did everything," said Aspin.

"They competed well, passed the ball, worked their socks off for 90 minutes, got balls into the box and created chances.

"They did everything I wanted from them but still didn't win the game.

"I can't have a go at the players because I thought they were excellent and played Wakefield off the park.

"Anyone who saw the game would know that there is a good team here.

"It doesn't matter how much possession you have if you don't take your chances and don't score goals you are not guaranteed to win.

"We are just not getting that bit of luck we need at the moment."

Aspin had predicted Town's toughest game of the season after Wakefield had twice pushed his side close at the Shay.

But nothing could have been further from what developed as Halifax dominated from start to finish.

"I expected a difficult game but we outplayed them so much it was a bit of a surprise," said the Shay boss.

"They are the biggest team I have ever seen in my life so you know that from set pieces they might cause problems.

"You could see before the goal that Danny Lowe was picking up the lad so James Riley went on to counteract that and he ended up scoring."

There were plenty of positives for the Shaymen, not least James Dean bagging his 31st goal of the season.

"He is in a good run of scoring and the goals have been crucial," said Aspin.

"They dominated the game from the middle of the park."

Town moved to within nine points of Lancaster as the leaders crashed to a surprise home defeat against Garforth Town.

The Shaymen have two games in hand over their rivals and the teams still have to meet in Halifax.

"As long as we produce that level of performance over the next 21 games we are going to pick up a lot of points," said Aspin.

"Hopefully it will be enough.

PAUL Sykes has cut a pretty frustrated figure over the past couple of months, serving a three match ban and being unable to force his way into the Town side.

The centre back took that frustration out on Durham City, scoring 22 minutes into his debut for Ossett Town who he has joined on a one month loan deal.

"Paul can't get a game and will be rusty," said Aspin. "I wanted him, to go out on loan and get a run of games.

"When he comes back we will still have 16 games to play and he will play a part.

"I felt it was better if we could get him out on loan straight away."

It is unusual for a team to loan a player to a club from a higher division - Ossett Town are in Unibond Premier.

"If we were in the next league we would do well in it," said Aspin.

"It is just getting out of this one." “I just wish it could have been the winner.

“He had not been at his best in the previous two games against Wakefield, but on Saturday he did well.”

The first appearance from the start of the midfield trio of Tom Baker, Scott Phelan, who hit the bar twice, and Harry Winter was another bonus.

“They had not played together before and I thought they did well,” said Aspin.

“They dominated the game from the middle of the park.”
