Walsh gets treble to lift Town title hopes

BY PAUL DEWS GOAL-DEN BOY Shaun Walsh hit treble top to keep Brighouse Town in the running for the title.

Walsh bagged a hat-trick as Brighouse swept aside nearest rivals Hemsworth 3-1 to narrow the gap at the top.

Brighouse are now just four points behind leaders Silsden, who were in cup action and have two games in hand.

While Brighouse were narrowing the gap, Silsden continued their progress by beating Campion 4-1 in the second round of the Premier Division Cup.

Mick Ward (2), Adam Ackroyd and Andy Holden netted for the winners while Andy Watt bagged the hosts' consolation.

Strugglers

In the only other top-flight league game, Ovenden West Riding beat struggling Littletown 4-1.

Danny Scott put the strugglers 1-0 up before the interval, but Ovenden hit back courtesy of goals from Danny Megson, Kevin Megson, Lee Burrows and Mark Wood.

Altofts were also 4-1 away winners, in the first division and they moved ahead of Steeton in the race for the title.

Paul Robinson was in at the double before further goals from Justin Middleton and Craig Hodgson secured the points at Halifax Irish.

Altofts are now two points ahead of Steeton, having played the same number of games.

Wakefield City are the duo's nearest rivals – some 12 points behind Steeton – and they lost further ground after being held 3-3 at home by Rawdon Old Boys.

Wakefield raced into a 3-0 lead thanks to first-half goals from James Singleton (2) and Scott Sharp, but Rawdon staged a stirring second-half comeback to ensure honours ended even.

Chris Wray bagged a brace while Chris Brown also netted for the visitors.

The draw was enough to take Rawdon to within touching distance of safety after bottom club Dudley Hill Athletic crashed to their 14th defeat in 17 outings.

Athletic went down 3-2 at Marsden with Jack Walker (2) and Andrew Adlington scoring the goals for the victors.

There was better news for close rivals Dudley Hill Rangers who beat Salts Old Boys 2-1 to ease their worries.

Andrew Warren and Mathew Maszaros found the target for Rangers with Andy Stocks replying.

In the first division cup, Heckmondwike beat Hunsworth 5-2, but Hall Green and Eastmoor both bowed out.

There was a remarkable game in the second division cup where Farnley somehow contrived to throw away a 3-1 half-time lead against Westbrook Wanderers and lost 6-5 in extra time.

Goals from John Drake (2), Paul Robinson (2) and Tim Goodwill should have been enough for Farnley, but Matthew Bates hit back with a hat-trick while Phil Morton, Rob Murphy and Simon Wilson also netted for the winners.
