A spate of chimmney fires in Calderdale has led firefighters to issue advice to residents.
They are urging people to keep their chimneys and flues clean and well maintained and make sure embers are properly put out before people go to bed. They also advise to always use a fire guard to protect against flying sparks from hot embers. The most common causes of chimney fires are improper appliance sizing, burning unseasoned wet wood, infrequent sweeping and cleaning, and overnight burning or smouldering wood for long periods in wood stoves. There were 120 chimmney fires in West Yorkshire last year.
