Two of Calderdale’s acting ‘lovies’ who have taken to the road on a £10 tank of fuel hope to reach Gibraltar in ten days with the help of charitable celebrity friends.

Dan Coll, 53, of Brighouse, and Dan Carey, 44, of Hebden Bridge, were waved off from Hebden Bridge by public wellwishers as they headed on their quirky Middle Aged Road Trip challenge for a serious cause.

The actors hope to raise awareness and £10,000 for emotional support charity Samaritans - a charity especially close to Dan Coll’s heart since using their services when he was suffering from depression - a mental illness which could affect one in three of us at any time.

Dan, who has had acting roles in TV’s Emmerdale and film Northern Soul, said: “Aside from the mad cap daftness of it all, there is a serious motive behind the driving force of our adventure. The Samaritans really helped me when I was at my lowest ebb - it’s a fantastic charity and we want to show our support.”

Dan Carey, who has recently starred as Fred West for a new three part docu-drama due to be aired this winter, said: “We’re having a great time - it’s every middle aged man’s dream - it’s tough; we’ve hardly slept and have eaten very little - but it’s all for a fantastic cause and we’re having good fun.”

Yesterday, the guys travelled 14 hours from France to Barcelona, Spain, with acting friend Dean Sullivan and were down to three euros so were taking to the streets of Barcelona to busk to raise cash for the next leg of their journey and towards the work of Samaritans. Today, they will be in Valencia with international women’s snooker referee Michaela Tabb.

The driving force behind the Middle Aged Road trip acting duo have roped in as many celebrity friends to help them along the way including former Coronation Street star Kevin Kennedy, model Charlotte Dawson, EastEnders Cheryl Fergison and Melissa Suffield, Blue Peter celebrity Peter Purves, musician Victoria Aitken, actor Dean Sullivan, X Factor star Frankie Cocozza, actor John Blundell, comedian Mike McLean, snooker referee Michaela Tabb and others.

Actor Dean Sullivan joined them on day three and four of the crusade. He said: “It’s a great idea and a great way to grab people’s attention for a fantastic cause.”
