A CAMPAIGN to drum up £25,000 for a new Fax under-23s side is now more than half way to its ambitious target.

More than £15,000 has been raised towards the FaxBuilder fund in just six months.

Halifax RLFC Supporters’ Trust is now preparing to hand over the third £5,000 installment to club officials at the home game against Batley on June 26.

Christian Smith, trust vice-chairman, said: “We are absolutely delighted. I don’t think anyone expected this only this far down the track. It’s really impressive and everyone has pulled together.”

A recent Bloemy and Friends event at Siddal Rugby Club raised £500 towards the total.

It saw around 70 fans rub shoulders with rugby heroes including ex-Fax player Jamie Bloem, prop Jim Gannon, Huddersfield’s Eorl Crabtree, Warrington’s Tony Smith, referee Ben Thaler and BBC commentator James Deighton.

“They all contributed to making it a really good night which everyone throughly enjoyed,” said Mr Smith. The trust now hopes it can raise the remaining £10,000 next month at its biggest fund-raisers, the Summer Bash and a sponsored walk.

It would put the campaign three months ahead of its October target date and give the trust time to raise even more cash.

“We are only making a contribution towards the cost of having an under-23 team - it will probably cost around £35,000 in total,” said Mr Smith.

“If we could raise it early and look to raise the rest, theoretically we could take that burden off the club this season.”

Fax are hopeful for promotion when remaining Super League licences are allocated next month and believe a strong youth side is vital to its future success.

Matt Turner, of the club, said: “Going forward, one of the strongest things we can do is have a strong youth system.”

The Summer Bash is held at The Venue, Bowers Mill, Barkisland, on Friday July 1. Tickets cost £25 or £225 for a table of 10 including food and entertainment.

Organisers say the event will not be rugby orientated and will be fun for fans and non-fans alike.

The sponsored walk from Halifax to the Dewsbury game takes place on Sunday July 3.
