A daughter who will run to help beat her mother’s bowel cancer has been training with celebrity Sporty Spice ahead of this year’s Great North Run.

Anna Walker, 30, of Lee Mount, Halifax, has been selected to run 13 miles in Team North with former Spice Girl Mel C - in a north/south challenge to raise the most money.

Sunday September 15 will be athletic Anna’s eighth GNR and the third year of supporting Beating Bowel Cancer.

The charity is of personal significance to her. Two-years-ago, Anna’s mum, Margaret Walker, was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

“Since mum’s diagnosis, Beating Bowel Cancer became an obvious charity choice.”

Anna said her mother’s cancer was picked up through routine screening and says it is essential for people who are eligible for bowel cancer screening take part - even if they have no symptoms.

She said: “The Great North Run is a special event; one of the highlights of my year. This year will be extra special - I can’t wait to be on the start line with Mel C and the rest of Team North - she was a real good sport.”
