A 17-year-old is critically ill in Leeds General Infirmary after being hit by a car which failed to stop.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident in Tingley on Good Friday at 12.15 am on the A653 Dewsbury Road.

The vehicle, believed to be a small silver coloured car (possibly a Toyota), was in collision with the 17-year-old Middleton teenager on the near side of the Dewsbury-bound road.

The vehicle initially stopped but then made off and the victim was left with serious injuries to his body.

The car was heading from Leeds towards Dewsbury along the main A653 and may have front end damage as a result of the incident.
