Neighbours joined up to celebrate community and friendship by eating together.

The Big Lunch, part of the Eden project in Cornwall, aimed to get people across the UK to mix with their neighbours for a few hours over a meal.

Residents in Highfield Avenue, Bailiff Bridge, enjoyed lunch with neighbours.

St Mary’s Church in Luddenden enjoyed a buffet lunch, followed by a Songs of Praise service.

At Higgins Close Day Centre in Halifax, the Mayor of Calderdale, Nader Fekri, joined residents for sandwiches and cakes at their indoor street party.

Mary Rumble, co-ordinator at the centre, said: “We held the event indoors because of the weather and to make it easier for our residents.

“A lot of the families have come too, so we’re pleased with the way it has gone.”

The centre is run by volunteers but is currently seeking more, particularly bus drivers. Cllr Fekri (Lib Dem, Calder) said: “It’s fantastic. Volunteering seems to be a way of life for so many people and the effort, energy, time and enthusiasm people have is quite humbling.”
