Width of post denies Crocs

Old Crossleyans 14Hartlepool Rovers 16 CROCS bossed the scrums and lineouts but were still unable to overcome a mediocre but determined Hartlepool Rovers side at Broomfield.

It was a second home defeat in eight days for Crocs, who stay sixth from bottom of North Two East but are in danger of being dragged into a relegation dogfight.

Rovers took an eighth minute lead when fullback Foreman and winger Lilley combined well to go through some weak tackling with Lilley going over in the corner. Sainty missed the conversion attempt.

This followed a promising Crocs attack in which both Jack and Ryan Hammond were prominent.

The home side retaliated almost immediately and it was only repeated and, in the eyes of some, dubious spoiling by Rovers that kept Crocs at bay. Neil Richardson finally went under the posts for Chris Duffy to convert and put the Broomfield side in front 7-5.

Frequent stoppages caused by handling errors were interspersed with good runs by Jack Hammond, Richardson and Shane Davis, before the visitors again took advantage of poor tackling with Lilley again scoring in the corner to make it 7-10.

From the restart James Wainwright weaved through the Rovers defence to score under the posts. Duffy again converted and the first half ended with Crocs defending but tackling well.

The second half was a stop start affair with frequent handling errors.

Davis was yellow carded and Sainty took advantage with the subsequent penalty to put Rovers to within a point.

Captain Chris Seymour followed Manny Riaz to the touchline through injury and handling on the floor enabled Sainty to put Rovers 16-14 up with 10 minutes to go.

Andy Day, who had been carrying an injury all the game, was replaced by Paul Michael but Crocs, despite winning enough ball, were unable to establish a foothold in Rovers territory.

They had a final chance with two minutes to go but a penalty bounced back off the post.
