A RAPIST tricked his way into his victim’s home and carried out a terrifying attack while her young daughter was asleep in bed.
Heroin-user James Bland, 35, of Oak Street, Elland, committed the offence five days after being released from custody and in breach of an electronically-monitored curfew.
Bradford Crown Court was told Bland subjected the single mum to a degrading ordeal in Elland while her young daughter slept.
During the attack in December, Bland choked his victim, punched her, bit her and had unprotected sex.
Bland was found guilty of rape following a trial last month and had not expressed any remorse.
Judge Jonathan Rose said it was an aggravating feature that Bland had ‘’violated the sanctity of her home.’’
‘’The circumstances show a degree of planning and cunning, a disregard for the child and a disregard for restrictions placed on you by the court,’’ Judge Rose told Bland.
He branded Bland as dangerous and callous and jailed him for a minimum of five years.
In May last year Bland, while on licence from a previous robbery sentence, armed himself with a knife and chased Waleed Khalid into a pizza takeaway in Oak Street.
Bland pleaded guilty to offences of racially aggravated common assault and possession of an offensive weapon in relation to the incident involving Mr Khalid.
He was given a total concurrent prison term of 35 weeks for those matters. Bland must also register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
Detective Insp Mark Gaunt, said: “This was a particularly nasty attack and we very much welcome the sentence.”
