To mark National Heroes Day 2011, the children and staff at Halifax’s Beech Hill School recognised their very own heroes.

A whole school assembly saw pupils and staff dressed as soldiers, doctors and nurses as well as some children who decided to honour their own heroes, including some dressing as their parents and teachers.

Children nominated family members for particular acts of bravery or courage.

Ali Aksar, eight, nominated his uncle for giving the family a place to stay after a house fire, and Iqra Yasir aged seven nominated her dad who had been in a near-fatal car crash and is now making a remarkable recovery.

Guests of honour were two police officers who accepted a hero award on behalf of the police. More than 30 pupils had nominated the police force.
